The wind resource study in Koliganek indicates good potential for the development of wind power to augment the village’s diesel power supply. One excellent advantage for the village is availability of the old airstrip where the meteorological test tower had been located. Because the village and surrounding area is comprised of permafrost soils where foundations are expensive, construction of wind turbines on the old airstrip could significantly reduce construction costs. Koliganek though has a small population and very low electrical loads which has proven to be economically challenging for wind power development.
