Gambell has a superb Class 7 wind resource with a mean annual wind speed at the 30 meter level of 9.13 m/s, one of the highest measured in any Alaska community. Alaska Village Electric Cooperative installed three Northern Power Systems 100 kW Northwind 100 (A model) wind turbines near the met tower site in 2009. These turbines work to offset diesel fuel usage in the powerplant. In 2012, 26 percent of Gambell’s electricity was generated by wind power.
