Scammon Bay has an excellent, but challenging, wind resource for wind power development. Wind behavior at initial site of interest demonstrates ideal characteristics for wind power, except for significant winter time icing detected in the data. This icing may result in wind turbine energy production loss. Further met tower testing at a lower site nearer the village indicated lower wind resource and at least some potential for icing problems. In general, a strong wind resource for wind power development exists at the higher elevations immediately south of Scammon Bay, but the trade-off is an icing environment that increases in severity with elevation. Successful wind power development in the community may require active turbine blade anti-icing and/or de-icing features.
